In the context of contemporary global challenges, such as climate change, environmental degradation and growing social inequalities, classic or hybrid conflicts, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has become a key component of modern educational systems. Its main goal is to ultimately change mindsets, to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes necessary to contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future, without which the development of either small communities or countries, regardless of their size, is not possible. ESD goes beyond the traditional transmission of knowledge by promoting critical thinking, responsible decision-making and active civic participation. Through systemic, interdisciplinary approaches and learner-centered methodologies, it encourages individuals to understand the interconnections between the environmental, social and economic dimensions of development. As a result, students and learners become more aware of their role in addressing local and global challenges. An important framework for implementing ESD is provided by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals support the integration of sustainability principles into educational practices and promote the development of the skills needed for responsible citizenship in the 21st century. Educational activities focused on sustainability help learners develop holistic problem-solving skills, collaboration skills and a commitment to social and environmental responsibility. Research results indicate that participation in ESD programs at any level increases awareness of environmental issues, strengthens civic engagement and promotes sustainable behaviours. In addition, it contributes to the development of essential transversal skills, including communication, creativity, adaptability and teamwork. In conclusion, Education for Sustainable Development plays a transformative role in building resilient societies, capable of responding effectively to current and future challenges. By promoting the values of sustainability and empowering individuals to act responsibly, education becomes a powerful factor in social transformation and long-term sustainable development.
