Assessing the Impact of ICT Development on the Economic and Social Welfare of Asian Economies: The Moderating Role of Corruption Control
Last modified: 2022-11-17
Abstract
This study aims to unravel the impact of information and communication technology (ICT) on the social and economic welfare of Asian countries by using a panel Generalized Method of Moment (GMM) model over the period 2011-2019. The results demonstrate that mobile, broadband, and internet penetration are the main driver of the socio-economic well-being in Asian countries. Importantly, while corruption has a detrimental effect on economic and social welfare, its interaction with various aspects of ICT yields positive and significant results, demonstrating that improved ICT facilities mitigate the negative impact of corruption on social and economic well-being. The study proposed that coordinated efforts must be launched to capitalize on the inherent benefits of ICT use, such as lowering the escalating costs of communication technology facilities like cell phone purchases, internet access rates, and so on.
