The Image of the Danube Bird “Zеgzitsa” in English Translations of the “The Tale of Igor's Campaign”

Abstract

The article examines the variants of translation of the archaic lexeme “zеgzitsa” in the English versions of the outstanding literature monument of the period of Kievan Rus – epic poem “The Tale of Igor's Campaign”. The author demonstrates how this obsolete word in the modern English-language interpretation is replaced by different images of birds (gull, seagull, cuckoo), as well as gives the viewpoints in modern controversy regarding to the meaning of the lexeme “zеgzitsa” meaning.
