Abstract

Objectives: This paper’s focus is to design and validate a set of novel Vertical T&L NetApps thatare linked to an open repository and a service orchestration platform. Components of these NetApps arevertically related (specific to Vertical agnostic and T&L sector) and connectivity related (i.e. PNF/VNF for5G networks). Prior work: Theoretical research of the author in the T&L and 5G fields. Approach: Allactivities will be approached in an agile manner, with incremental features and complexity in descriptors, testing activities, and scenarios, allowing for progressive achievement of the target benchmarking scenarioswith consistent intermediate step releases that guarantee defined operation and reproducibility targets. Results: The entry of SMEs as NetApp developers for over-the-top (OTT) services and service functions inrealistic 5G scenarios will be aided by this study. Implications: The paper can start larger discussionsbetween the T&L stakeholders about the need for 5G integration in the industry. Value: The paper willdemonstrate the value of 5G connectivity for the European T&L sector by focusing on a multi-modalapproach that includes all major freight logistics hubs and their respective stakeholders, resulting in an end-to-end (E2E) chain of connected T&L services that caters to a pan-European ecosystem.
