Investigation of Inglish Proper Names as a Way to Help Bachelor Students Acquire Sociolinguistic Competence

Abstract

The diversity of proper names and scientific approaches to their study are reflected in works on onomastics, which studies the formation, development, and spread of proper names, ways of borrowing from other languages, and transformation in new conditions. Proper names possess a unique status in the system of semiotics of natural languages. They accumulate in significant layers of historical, social, and spiritual experience of a certain ethnic group, reflecting significant fragments of the linguistic picture of the world. Many onyms have become the carriers of cultural concepts, and their unities have become linguocultural codes. With the development of Internet communication, changes are observed in the field of proper names, associated with the virtualization of products of human activity that are well known in the real world and have been transferred to the virtual environment of libraries, Internet banks, and electronic media. Current approaches to training bachelors in higher education institutions of the Danube region need to take into account their acquisition of sociolinguistic competence, which reflects the level of the English language use and includes certain social norms, namely: rules of good manners, greetings, partings and address formulas, as well as mastery of extralinguistic means of communication. Particularly effective in this direction is the use of authentic English-language texts in practical classes, which will contribute to achieving success. The use of sociolinguistic information in the educational process contributes to the conscious assimilation of the material; ensures an increase in the cognitive activity of bachelors; contributes to the creation of positive motivation; provides an incentive for their independent work.
