Goethe's Concept of World Literature and Its Implementation in the Contemporary Educational System
Last modified: 2025-06-17
Abstract
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s concept of Weltliteratur (world literature) represents a seminal vision of literary cosmopolitanism and intercultural dialogue. This study explores Goethe’s original articulation of world literature as a means of fostering mutual understanding among nations and cultures through shared literary exchange. It then examines how this concept has evolved and found resonance in contemporary educational frameworks, particularly within globalized curricula and multicultural pedagogy. Through a critical review of literary theory, educational policy, and classroom practices, the study argues for the relevance of Goethe’s ideal in addressing the challenges of an interconnected, yet fragmented, modern world. The paper advocates for a renewed emphasis on world literature as a transformative tool for fostering empathy, critical thinking, and intercultural literacy in today’s learners.
