Abstract

This paper analyses the phenomenon of professional burnout among psychotherapists from the perspective of risk factors, prevention mechanisms, and intervention strategies validated in the specialized literature. Psychotherapeutic work involves constant exposure to clients’ emotional suffering, a high level of relational responsibility, and intense cognitive demands, all of which may facilitate the onset of burnout in the absence of adequate self-regulation resources and professional support. The paper adopts a theoretical-analytical approach, based on the integration of classical and contemporary literature in the fields of occupational health and psychotherapy. The main dimensions of burnout, its impact on therapeutic style and professional identity, as well as the role of supervision, professional boundaries, and self-care practices in preventing exhaustion are highlighted. The conclusions support the need for a systemic approach to the phenomenon, in which the responsibility for maintaining psychological health is shared among the therapist, the professional community, and the institutions in which the therapist works.
