Why We Believe Fake News: The Psychology Behind Misinformation

The proliferation of misinformation poses substantial challenges to public decision-making, social trust, and democratic processes. This article provides a systematic analysis of the psychological mechanisms underlying susceptibility to fake news, focusing on cognitive biases, motivated reasoning, and emotional responses. The role of social media algorithms and network structures in amplifying misinformation is also examined. By integrating findings from cognitive, social, and digital psychology, the article evaluates the impact of misinformation on individual beliefs and collective behavior. Evidence-based strategies for mitigating misinformation, including media literacy interventions, critical thinking training, and algorithmic transparency, are critically assessed. The review highlights both human and technological factors that contribute to the persistence of false information and offers directions for future research aimed at promoting informed decision-making in the digital age.
