The paper analyses the strategic role of the services sector in supporting the economic, social and environmental transformations specific to the paradigm of sustainable development. In the current context of globalisation, digitalisation and the reconfiguration of consumption and production patterns, services are acquiring an increasingly important place in the structure of modern economies, not only through their contribution to gross domestic product and employment, but also through their capacity to generate added value, innovation, social inclusion and efficiency in the use of resources. From this perspective, the services sector may be regarded as a determining factor in promoting sustainable economic models capable of responding simultaneously to the requirements of competitiveness and social responsibility.
The objective of the research is to highlight the manner in which services contribute to the achievement of the objectives of sustainable development, through an analysis of the main mechanisms by which they influence economic growth, social cohesion and environmental protection. The study seeks to demonstrate that services no longer represent exclusively a complementary component of the economy, but rather a central field of structural transformation, with a direct impact on quality of life and on the sustainability of economic systems. Consideration is given both to traditional services and to knowledge-intensive services, digital, educational, financial, tourism, logistics and health services, the expansion of which significantly influences the dynamics of contemporary development.
From a methodological point of view, the paper is based on a qualitative approach, grounded in the analysis of the specialist literature, the interpretation of the concepts associated with sustainable development, and the examination of the relationship between the evolution of the tertiary sector and the new economic and social requirements. The research highlights the fact that services can support sustainable development by stimulating innovation, reducing the material intensity of economic activities, increasing the efficiency of information flows, improving access to education and healthcare, as well as by facilitating the transition towards green and smart economies. At the same time, the analysis underlines that the positive impact of services on sustainable development depends on the quality of public policies, the level of digitalisation, investment in human capital and the institutional capacity to integrate the principles of sustainability into development strategies.
The results of the research show that the services sector represents an essential vector of sustainable development in the contemporary economy, as it promotes adaptability, competitiveness and economic resilience. In conclusion, the paper argues that harnessing the potential of services requires an integrated approach, capable of correlating economic efficiency with social equity and environmental responsibility, thus contributing to the consolidation of a model of sustainable development in the long term.
