Abstract

In the dynamic and complex context of contemporary European security, the management of the external borders of the European Union (EU) has become one of the main institutional and political challenges. The objective of this paper is to analyze the regional implications of Frontex–Romania cooperation in the context of contemporary European security, marked by the intensification of migration, cross-border crime and hybrid threats. The study follows the strategic role of Romania in the management of the external borders of the European Union and its contribution to the strengthening of common security mechanisms. The research is based on the observation of European institutional events and developments, including the development of the Frontex Agency, the expansion of the Schengen area, the implementation of digital border control systems and Romania’s involvement in international and regional operations. The results of this paper highlight that the Frontex–Romania partnership has evolved from a technical cooperation to a strategic partnership essential for the security of the European Union. This paper provides a perspective on the interdependence between national and European security, demonstrating that the effective management of external borders requires cooperation, solidarity and institutional integration. It also highlights the role of Frontex as a central instrument of European governance in the field of security. Overall, the partnership contributes to regional stability and to strengthening the security of the common European space.
