Situated in the East of Romania, Galati county seat and a Danube port, the city of Galati was first documented in 1445 (in an official document signed by Prince Stefan Voda; the existence of this town dates back long before this year, the city of Galati having an important role in regional trade after 1484. Since the 18th century, Galati has became the largest commercial port of the Lower Danube region. The city was awarded the regime of “Porto Franco” by Prince Mihail Sturdza, between 1837 – 1883 and hosted the European Commission headquarters of the Danube from 1856 until 1939. Its population numbers about 290593 inhabitants (2010 estimate).
Galati, located on the left bank of the Danube, 80 km from the Danube Delta, is one of the largest Romanian transport nodes connected to the main European transport routes: the river transport: Rhine – Main – Danube linking North Sea to the Black Sea, railway transport – ensuring the transfer between railways in Europe and former Soviet countries, and road transport, interacting with European countries through a dense network of county, national and European roads.
