Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this paper is to identify and discuss the position of gender equality within the value hierarchy of the citizens, living in the countries from the Danube basin. Prior Work: A monograph dedicated to the notions about the Otherness in Bulgaria where the gender issues are discussed in a European context. Approach: Comparative study of the empirical data about the Danube countries, excerpted from Gender Inequality Index 2014. Results: Identified differences between the Danube countries in the societal practices, reflected the gender equality, e.g. share of seats in the parliament, level of education, participation in the labour market and others. Implications: Some conclusions can be drawn about the interdependence between Gender Inequality Index and the Masculinity Index, identified by authors in the field of intercultural communication. Value: The comparative study of the gender equality values within the Danube region will increase the intercultural self-awareness of the inhabitants of the Danube space and this way will increase the mutual understanding and the sense of common identity among them.
