Abstract

The basis of legal regime of Danube navigation, in the modern sense, were made by the Paris Peace Treaty signed March 30, 1856, after the Crimean War.

By this international law legal act was put to an end the anachronical situation in the great European river, where the rules were set by the great empires of Austria, Turkey and Russia according to their interests. The rights and interests of the riverside residents such as Romanian Principates, Serbia, Bulgaria, etc. were ignored and brutally infringed.

Until 1919, the European Danube Commission, a body created by the Paris Treaty, contributed significantly to the lower stream modernization and development of navigation in this sector.

This paper aims to unravel to some extent, the circumstances of navigational rules during the reference period on this great naval artery.
