Abstract

The official memory’s construction and dissemination in the annexed territories during late Stalinism included creating mythical images of heroes who symbolized the struggle against foreign invaders. Soviet public discourse, particularly the communist party’s periodicals, shared these images by regularly publishing propagandistic articles, historical essays, and news about their commemorations. Based on the analysis of materials from the regional newspaper “Prydunaiska Pravda” (“Danube Truth”), the process of the local heroic pantheon’s creation in the Izmail region has been revealed, the main characteristics of Soviet and imperial heroes have been compared, and their place in the region’s memorial space has been determined.
