Abstract

The Danube represented an important geographical trait of Romania, which played an important role in the development of the Romanian modern state during the 19th century. To argue this idea, we will make use of world-system theories developed by the American school of sociology, best represented by Immanuel Wallerestein. Therefore we will emphasise the integration of Romanian area as a periphery and provider of raw materials to the capitalist world-system developed in the Western Europe and the role of the Danube as main commercial artery. In turn, this process supported the construction of the national state, both from the material and cultural point of view.
